The Museo Casa Roig, a 1920 landmark in Humacao listed on the National Register of Historic Places, sustained critical damage during Hurricane María, including roof collapse, water infiltration, mold proliferation, and widespread deterioration of historic finishes and systems.

Díaz Paunetto Arquitectos, in collaboration with specialists in preservation, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering, prepared a comprehensive restoration plan. The proposal emphasizes historic preservation while upgrading the building to modern standards of resilience and museum functionality.

Key interventions include:

• Architectural & Historic Preservation: Full roof replacement with hurricane-resistant systems, restoration of original wood and stained-glass windows, conservation of decorative mosaics, and preservation of character-defining elements.
• Structural Upgrades: Reinforcement of roof assemblies and steel elements, stabilization of ceilings, and protection of balcony mosaics and concrete surfaces.
• Mechanical & Electrical Systems: Complete replacement of HVAC, chilled water, and ductwork systems; new museum-grade humidity and temperature controls; full electrical distribution replacement; and installation of a 50kW generator for backup power.
• Hazard Mitigation: Measures such as laminated glass reinforcement for stained-glass windows, roof structure reinforcement, and backup power generation to ensure long-term resilience against future storms.                           

The project combines emergency stabilization, meticulous conservation, and discreet integration of modern systems. This approach seeks not only to restore Casa Roig’s architectural integrity, but also to secure its role as a cultural and educational resource for future generations.
