We proposed a holistic plan that treats the site as a cohesive campus rather than isolated lots. While each parcel can function independently, the ensemble is conceived to work collectively and make a responsible contribution to its urban context. The historic building remains the anchor and primary pedestrian entrance, respectfully framed by new, intentionally austere contemporary volumes that heighten its presence. A large central courtyard organizes the complex—an oasis from street noise and a “green lung” that mitigates the urban heat island effect while fostering social activity and clear circulation.
To reduce cost and advance environmental stewardship, the scheme incorporates recycled wood pallets as a primary material. On the island, pallets are abundant byproduct waste; with proper treatment, they can be repurposed into sunscreens, wall panels, doors, and benches. This approach lowers construction and utility costs by improving solar control and thermal performance, reduces long-term replacement expenses through readily available raw material, and promotes a compelling image of a more sustainable future—raising public awareness around the urgent need for recycling in our community.
