The Cruzado Residence is a renovation project in Rincón, PR, designed to transform an existing structure into a contemporary family retreat. The design process reconfigured massing through strategic volume additions and removals, balancing openness with privacy and establishing a clear relationship between indoor and outdoor living.
The renovation reorganizes the ground floor to integrate social spaces, living, dining, kitchen, and terraces with direct connection to the pool and outdoor lounge areas. Folding glass doors and shaded terraces dissolve boundaries between inside and outside, emphasizing natural ventilation and tropical living. The second level is dedicated to private areas, including a master suite with a generous closet, spa-like bathroom illuminated by a skylight, and a private terrace oriented toward surrounding views.
One of the defining features of the renovation is the redesigned façade, articulated with patterned breeze blocks. These permeable elements provide shading, privacy, and ventilation, while establishing a distinctive architectural identity that references Puerto Rico’s modernist tradition.
The material palette, polished concrete, terrazzo, natural wood, and matte finishes, creates a balance of durability and warmth. Sustainability strategies include passive cooling through cross ventilation, deep shading elements, and careful orientation to minimize solar heat gain.
