Gardenia 1691

The remodeling and expansion of this residence was developed for a family of four on a 1,270 m² site located at the highest point of a prominent suburban development in San Juan. On clear days, the second floor offers views of the city to the east. We were brought into the project under atypical circumstances: the previous architect had passed away and the original contractor was dismissed after completing the pool and pool house. Our role began with assessing the existing construction and redesigning key elements, including the terrace, the connection between the master bedroom and the exterior, and the overall identity of the front façade. Once our design was complete, the client brought on a new contractor with the expertise required to execute the project’s first phase.

Key objectives included leveraging the site’s topography, enhancing views, and maximizing natural light and ventilation. The public areas were expanded and opened to the west, creating a stronger relationship between interior and exterior spaces while redefining the home’s image. To address the challenges posed by the west-facing façade, we introduced a sculptural sunscreen element that filters sunlight and provides privacy. Inspired by the client’s medical profession, the corten steel screen features an organic, cellular pattern that creates dynamic shadows and light projections throughout the interior. Initially designed by hand, the screen was later refined using parametric modeling for precision fabrication and installation. The overall architectural language balances continuity and contrast, blending the original structure with new, contemporary elements through a restrained palette of concrete, white surfaces, glass, and corten steel.
