Lagoon House

This residential project is a 6,000-square-foot home designed for an entrepreneur, his wife, and their three children, located on a flat 2,000-square-meter lot in a suburban development in Carolina, Puerto Rico. The site offers exceptional natural features, including views of the Torrecilla Lagoon and access via surrounding water canals. These unique conditions, along with the client’s emphasis on the dining room as the central gathering space for daily family rituals, strongly influenced the home’s spatial organization and formal design. The dining area was conceived as the heart of the home, anchoring the entire program and symbolizing the family’s connection at the end of each day. The interplay between the lagoon and the canals helped shape the project’s footprint and massing strategy.

Architecturally, the design emphasizes a dialogue between the house and its natural surroundings, using planes, volumes, and spatial relationships to frame views, enhance ventilation, and allow for generous daylight. The residence is organized around a central courtyard, with surrounding volumes articulated through varied opening patterns that respond to solar orientation and programmatic needs. Overhangs and cantilevered balconies not only connect the distinct volumes but also provide shade and passive cooling. Jalousie doors open interior spaces to the courtyard, reinforcing the indoor-outdoor connection and encouraging natural airflow. Supported by over 70 concrete piles, the Lagoon House blends modern residential design with environmental responsiveness and was completed in 2000.
