Valle escondido 24

This project represents both a modern architectural residence and a design-build entrepreneurial venture, positioning the architect as both designer and developer. It serves as a prototype for a Hybrid Home, and an exploration into integrating renewable energy sources with conventional grid power (PREPA) to create an affordable and sustainable living model. The house will harness solar, wind, and water resources to supply the majority of its energy needs. Located on a 2,300-square-meter lot in a suburban area south of Guaynabo, the site is characterized by dense vegetation and a small creek. The challenging topography guided the design, which organizes living and sleeping areas on a single level while preserving a flat, private courtyard for outdoor recreation.

Architecturally, the house is composed of two intersecting volumes, one of which extends into a double-height living space with an overhead studio. This volume is slightly rotated to frame views of the surrounding mountains and is cantilevered above the garage, creating a floating effect while shading the windows below. The pool, also cantilevered, projects from the courtyard’s retaining wall and features a glass end wall that visually links the structure to the creek at the property’s entrance. Together, these design gestures connect the home to its natural environment while showcasing sustainable strategies in a modern, expressive form.
