Humacao Aquatic Complex

The Humacao Aquatic Complex is a public Olympic swimming facility designed to support the expansion of the Municipality of Humacao’s existing aquatic program in Puerto Rico. Sited on an unfinished parking lot adjacent to the Coliseum and near a newly inaugurated Fine Arts Center, the project is bounded by a natural creek along its southern and western edges. With a capacity exceeding 1,000 spectators, the project was developed under a tight public budget, prioritizing durability and low maintenance. Most spaces are naturally ventilated, excluding the gym and offices, and exposed concrete is used as the primary finish. Despite these constraints, the design embraces a contemporary architectural language through the use of precast components and algorithmically generated patterns.

At its core, the program includes an Olympic pool, competition-ready spectator stands, offices, a cafeteria, public and athlete restrooms, a gym, and a machine room. The design establishes a visual and spatial dialogue with the larger Coliseum across the street, using water as a central design theme to guide the user experience. A prominent cantilevered concrete roof shelters the main stands and supporting spaces below. The building’s envelope features perforated precast panels with parametrically designed circular patterns that facilitate natural ventilation while creating dynamic visual textures. The base consists of tightly spaced vertical precast fins that enhance security and airflow while producing a sense of visual intrigue as visitors approach. A bold red “natación” (swimming) sign embedded in the base acts as both a landmark and a promotional gesture for a sport still growing in local popularity.
