The Muñoz Lozada Residence involves both the remodeling and expansion of a 5,000-square-foot home located on a 2,000-square-foot lot in a prestigious suburban development in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico. Although the house was relatively new, only eight years old, the project faced several challenges, including structural deficiencies, poor connection to outdoor areas, an awkward and unwelcoming entrance, and an overly ornate façade. The design approach focused on addressing these issues through thoughtful reorganization and refinement, aiming to create a more cohesive, functional, and contemporary home.
A key component of the program was the addition of an exterior terrace that would seamlessly connect the main living areas with the pool and garden. From the street, the house now presents a modern and inviting façade with a clearly defined entrance, while maintaining a degree of privacy through the use of strategic massing and screening. Inside, the new addition serves as a transitional element leading toward the rear patio, reinforcing the relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape. Large glass doors and interior openings were introduced to enhance natural light, improve circulation, and strengthen visual connections between interior spaces and the lush outdoor environment.
